Thanks for visiting my blog!

I began this project a few months into my engagement after attending a book signing by Meg  Keene of A Practical Wedding. I walked away realizing I just needed to be writing about getting married.

I have always been a writer. Part of this identity is connected to my father, who was also a writer. As a kid he gave me journaling exercises. In middle school, high school, and college, I wrote and sometimes edited school papers. Sentences sound right to me when they are written well. Sometimes these sentences will play themselves over and over in my head until I write them down.

My interest in Buddhism also began with my dad. He practiced some meditation, and when I was young he tried to teach me some of these practices. I remember him singing “Om shante om” to me once  when I was scared. Another time he had me try to imagine a blank screen, like a movie screen, and envision my thoughts going by on the screen one at a time, with the goal of slowing them down.

In college, years after my dad passed away, I began attending a meditation group, where I connected with others in the group and really started learning about the practice. In May 2010, I attended a 5-day Zen retreat for young adults– part of the Wake Up! movement at Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California. At the Wake Up! retreat, called “Playing with Our Monkey Mind,” I became interested in daily practice, as opposed to just feeling like a Buddhist philosophically and during mediation meetings. I often struggle with anxiety during times of transition, which I write about here, and so have been making an effort to consciously use my practice more. The name for this blog comes from a walking meditation I learned while on this retreat. As you step with one foot, you say, “I have arrived.” With the other, “I am home.”

This blog is meant to be a space for me to record my thoughts, but also to connect with like-minded people. I hope some of my reflections and meditations are useful for you. I’d love to hear your thoughts and be friends, so please, say hello!
